THEY'RE BACK IN SEASON, BABY

When the calendar turns to January, I get really excited. More specifically, my taste buds start buzzing. They have a second sense about these things. They can feel Jan. 6th coming.

Who am I to deny them the awesomeness of a king cake? Tina bought one on Wednesday. I finished eating it (all by myself) on Saturday night. Hmm. Good.

The best part is Randazzo's opened a store around the corner from my house. The biggest bitch of king cake season used to be that Randazzo's would sell out by like 8 or 9 a.m. every day. If you weren't in line by 7 a.m., you were shit out of luck. I doubt this place will be as popular because it's in Harahan.

Randazzo's makes the best king cakes. To me, there is no second place. I usually won't even eat king cake if it's not from Randazzo's, except for a few other places.

I got the baby on my first bite of this king cake. I don't know if that's a good sign or a bad one. As Finney would say, we'll have to wait and find out.

The other seasonal food that comes around about January is crawfish. I could eat crawfish every day and never get tired of it. It would be my favorite food, except that you can only eat them about half the year.

I had my first taste of crawfish this season on Friday. They're really expensive right now, so I just bought one pound to go with my usual catfish/shrimp plate. For the beginning of the season, they weren't a bad size and had some good juice.

My dad is a professional at eating crawfish. If there was a national contest for that like the hot dog thing, I'm pretty sure pops would be in the Top 5 every year. I'm a pretty fast eater myself, but I ain't got nothing on the old man.

One time we were at an all-you-can-eat restaurant. They served the crawfish on plates, 3 pounds at a time. We get our first plate, and I got to town on my serving. I'm making great time through about my first two pounds. I think I'm flying when dad reaches over and grabs a handful from my plate.

Me: What are you doing?
Dad: I can't wait on your slow ass to finish before we get our next batch. So, I'm helping you finish.

THE TINA CURSING CORNER

My mom and I are draining the water off the pool cover. She can't get the suction going. "Fuck. What the fuck?" We get the suction going, but one of our tubes wasn't connected properly. "Fuck. What the fuck is going on?"

Mom is ready for a nap. "Jesus Christ. I'm so fucking tired."

Mom just finished working out. Mom: I blew it.
Me: What?
Mom: Waiting 'til the fucking afternoon.

Mom had a problem with a soap opera on her DVD. It wouldn't let her finish watching the episode. "I hit fast forward, and it goes to the end screen. I was like like, 'Fuck. What the fuck?' So then I tried again and didn't hit fast forward. Just let it play. Then, it cut off at 45 minutes. I was like 'Aw, fuck.' Ain't that something? It was the weirdest fucking thing."

Mom can't believe how hot it is outside. "Is it January or fucking June?" Then about thirty minutes later. "It feels like fucking June."

TV WEEK IN REVIEW

Best line: Scrubs. The new callous intern (to a cancer patient): "It's funny that the first part of cancer is can because there is nothing we can do for you."

Best song: Scrubs. Steak night. /// We gonna do it right. /// Steak is such a treat. /// It is the world's best meat. I've got the dance down as well.

Best guest star: Selma Hayek. 30 Rock. As usual, she was a breast of fresh air.

This week's rant: Scrubs is back and just about as good as ever so far. The past two seasons weren't really very good, especially when compared to the first five seasons. But the first two episodes of Season 8 reminded me of those first five seasons.

I think the switch to ABC really helped. Gave them that extra kick of motivation, and the company put a little promotion behind the show. I probably laughed more in the first episode of Season 8 then I did in the whole Season 6. Tuesday's episodes were a perfect mix of goofy and serious.

I liked J.D.'s speech basically stuffing it in NBC's face.

PARTING SHOTS
Jake Delhomme throws his fifth interception. We start singing the Subway commercial.

Liam: Five pick foot balls.

We're discussing the difference between Willie Roaf and Pig Goff.

Brick: Pig Goff was definitely the best Saint ever named after a farm animal.
Me: I don't know. Lamb Jones was pretty good.
Max: Lamb Jones never played for the Saints, Gene.
Me: That's a real person?
Max: Yeah. He went to Texas.
